That depends on the handle material and how it locks. Some handles are oven safe, but many are designed to be removed before the pan goes in. If the handle has plastic or rubberized parts, it likely needs to come off first.
A properly locked handle holds firm during normal tossing and lifting. The connection point is the weak spot, so a pan that wobbles or clicks when you shake it is not locked in. Check the lock mechanism before you start cooking.
Some are, particularly nonstick and stainless versions. Cast iron pans with removable handles usually are not, because the iron itself should not go through a dishwasher cycle. The handle may be dishwasher safe even when the pan is not.
Common sizes include 8, 9.5, 10, 11, and 12 inches. Sets often combine three pans across that range. Larger pans may include a helper handle or a trivet for serving.
A detachable handle lets the skillet go from stovetop to oven to storage without a long stick of metal in the way. The pan nests flat or stacks with others once the handle is off, which matters when cabinet space is tight. It also means you can slide the pan under a broiler or into a small oven where a fixed handle would not fit.
The handle typically locks into a bracket or socket on the pan wall, and some designs include a lid that fits the same opening. Materials vary: tri-ply stainless steel pans use a stainless handle, while granite-coated or cast iron versions may use a different grip. A 12-inch cast iron skillet with a removable handle and a stainless steel trivet is one example of how the hardware can double as a serving piece.
Sets often bundle three pans, such as 8, 9.5, and 11 inches, so you get a range of sizes that all share the same handle. Induction-compatible bases appear on some models, and dishwasher-safe construction shows up on both nonstick and stainless versions. The handle itself is not oven safe on every model, so the pan may need to go in without it.
